Zip lining

One of the things I like the best about living in another country is that you get to do dangerous things that you can't do at home.  I don't think there are places in the legalistic dominion of the USA where they have zip lining, because the insurance probably would be prohibitive.  Although I still can't figure out how ski resorts survive.  So on a beautiful Sunday in November, Julian, Lizzie and I went with our new family friends from Colorado Janine, Emily (7), and Felix(4) to Cuenca Canopy.  The men had some other bold adventures to take care of that day. So we all suited up to be flung out on cables across gorgeous 350 ft. ravines.  Felix did the first two lines only because of his age, but he was so nonchalant about he event, I am sure he could have done all 6 lines.  After getting over my fear of heights, I allowed myself to look down during the sail.  Then all of us started trying the different styles that you can do with the guides.  Of course, Julian was the first to try the Superman style.  This is where the guide holds onto your legs from behind and you fly with hands outstretched Superman style to the other side. All of the kids tried this. Then there is the Mariposa (butterfly) where you face the guide and straddle his legs.  He holds on to you and when you start sailing across, you let go of the cable and hang upside down in an X. This is pretty outrageous and I screamed my whole way across, but it was fun. Don't get the idea from Julian's lack of smiles(he is preteen and pictures aren't as cool) that he didn't enjoy himself. He did, as did we all.

Andrea Estefania

I am Andrea. I a 18 years old. I am very funny but I am also shy. I am short and I have curly brown hair. I like to study but now I have a lot of health problems and for this reason I can't dedicate all the time to studying. I have to go to the doctors frequently.
I have a lot of future plans but the most important are to finish studying, start work, and travel around the world. I'm studying English because I like it. But whenI left CEDEI 6 months ago I couldn't practice. So now English is difficult for me.

Teaching at CEDEI

I have had the pleasure of teaching at a language institute for the last 7 weeks here in Cuenca.  This school provides additional opportunities to learn and practice English in small classes with a lot of attention.  My students rage in age from 10-18.  However there are many adults that also take classes here.
Because this is an extra curricular activity, the students are very motivated to learn, and seem to enjoy the teaching. Our classes are for 1 hour and 15 minutes 4 times a week.  It's a very enjoyable place to work.

Jornadas de Deportiva

I am trying my best to keep up with all that's happening, in the order that it happens, but pictures and words don't always come out when you need them. It seems important to post the information about our teaching, so that you don't think we are just sitting in this pretty apartment all day, but I am waiting to get the pictures of the students and quotes from them. So what the hell, how about some more stunning pictures of our own kids.

The school that they attend has a big inauguration of the sports season. You would think it was the beginning of the Olympics with all the pomp and circumstance. There are two classes of every grade at CEDFI from preschool all the way through high school. There are a total of about 500 kids in the school. The school seems to be well respected here, because every time we tell people where the kids go, people know the school and tell us it is very good. After so many years of being at Bache Martin, it is a strange experience and Norm has not once picked up a paintbrush or drop cloth this year. For this event, each class picks a theme (one class was the Batmans, Lizzie's was Mummy Pigs, Julian's was Street Soccer) and they have mascots. Additionally, they choose a Madrina and Caballero for each class - these seem to be like homecoming king and queen at the class level. Both Lizzie and Julian were selected for their individual classes. Although princess already has quite a number of pretty dresses she could wear, she NEEEEDED to have another one. Julian has never owned a suit, but now has one. He believes with the suit and his proclivity for B.S., he is now equipped for the the legal or political professions. As we were downtown buying the suit, however, we saw the most amazing double rainbow I have ever seen.

The event was held in the same colosseum where we saw the President of Ecuador. 500 screaming students and even more screaming parents and families in the stands. The classes parade in and then some judging takes place for the best theme, best mascot, best cheering sections, etc. Then the torch is jogged around the colosseum and the larger torch is ignited. Something else caught on fire while they were doing it to add to the excitement, and then a few dance and cheerleading demonstrations were held. It was a lot of standing, screaming, and me whispering in another parent's ear to ask about what was happening next. I think Julian's favorite part was the female attention, holding his madrina's hand, having girls request kisses, etc. Lizzie also enjoyed the attention and looking like a princess. She will use any excuse to wear the dress. She wore it to a Halloween party we attended. She brought it out again last night when we had friends over...

Overall, we are pleased with the school. They really seem to care about the kids. Lizzie's teacher and other professionals there have called us in to talk to us about their concern with Lizzie's Spanish skills. (Yo teach, if you think hers are bad, you might want to consider slowing down during our meeting, because Mom and Dad aren't much better) They think it is impeding her learning and her happiness at school. We told them not to worry about her happiness at school, because basically, this is not a place where she is ever happy, no matter what country she is in. However, we are accommodating their interest by getting her some more tutoring in Spanish. The doctor at the school (yeah, it's a real doctor, not just a nurse.) is concerned about her because she has had two barfing incidents on the bus. First he gave her a prescription, and now he has requested that she get some tests done. We think it's just her motion sickness up the twisty roads to school, but we'll get the tests done anyway. The prescription, they can forget about.

Ok, we hope to get the teaching pictures up before the end of our cycle, which is in 3 weeks! Amazing how fast the time is flying.

Cuenca Art and Sig Sig

I wanted to write a blog about teaching at CEDEI, but I haven't gotten the pictures that I wanted.  So due to requests from abroad, here is more about living in Cuenca.  We had the opportunity to meet a family who work for the American Consulate in Guayaquil when we went to the beach in Montanita.  Mike Kreis is in Ecuador with his two daughters Lauren and Jordan.  Lizzie liked Lauren's bathing suit at the beach and decided she wanted to meet her.  We hit it off with this family and a month after our first meeting, they came to Cuenca for an extended weekend.  Mike is a baseball player and he plays on one of the few teams in Ecuador.  Baseball is pretty much not known at all here.  Which is why there was only one other person in the sports bar watching the World Series.  Fortunately he was a Phillies Fan(?), well he said he has been following the red teams for years.
Any way, Mike and his family came up from Guyaquil because even though he lives the cushy government life, he loves Cuenca.  He also loves art and there is quite a bit of good art here, as you can see from the pictures.   The artists display their work underneath a bridge near the river on Saturdays.  We were fortunate enough to be introduced to one of the best artists here. His name is Miguel Ilesco and he does sculptures of Galapagos animals.  He invited all of us to his family home in Sig Sig, which is about 1 1/2 hours up into the mountains from here.  We met some of his family and the kids had a wonderful time fishing and playing soccer together.  We went fishing at a trout farm, which is akin to fishing in a bucket, and yet Norm was the only one to catch a fish.  It was a beautiful weekend and we made some good friends.
Next post should contain more about our teaching and also about an event at the kids school where Lizzie and Julian have been elected Madrina and Padrina de Deportiva.  I don't know what it is exactly, but needless to say, Lizzie NEEDED a frilly pink dress.
